Good practice contract management framework

The framework is a good practice guide for managing a broad range of contracts. It is particularly relevant for contracts where services are delivered over a long period of time (five years plus) where customers need to ensure that service levels and value for money are maintained over the duration of the contract.

The framework outlines the activities that organisations should consider when planning and delivering contract management. In December 2016 we updated the framework, which we originally published in December 2008 alongside our report Central government’s management of service contracts and used to evaluate the management of eight major central government service contracts. Since then, the framework has become government’s standard reference text for contract management. Although there have been improvements in contract management over recent years, this framework focuses on fundamentals that remain unchanged, detailing key activities to be undertaken under 11 contract management areas. The framework was updated to sit alongside ‘Commercial and contract management: insights and emerging best practice’.
